On reacting reasonably to the (imagined) implication of bestiality

GEICO26N_2_WEBI thought we had seen the worst with the religious hysteria over Harry Potter (laughable) or the Westboro Baptist Church (mostly appalling but sometimes laughable). But it gets much, much worse – or better, depending on your point of view and sense of humor (and hey, you be careful with that – having a sense of humor makes you ill and sinful, and you should say ten Hail Marys and probably call an exorcist to take care of it). A new unrestrained outburst from conservative religious group One Million Moms has taken the prize for Most Laughably Ridiculous Concern Over Something Utterly Benign.

From an article at New York Daily News: 

Angry parents are up in arms over a “repulsive” cellphone app commercial that they say promotes bestiality.

One Million Moms wants auto insurance firm Geico to pull its latest TV campaign in which a woman appears to be flirting with a pig.

The conservative Christian group that monitors children’s programming issued a statement to condemn the clip.

That’s right! Bestiality! These totally reasonable and not-overprotective-at-all Moms are worried that at the first sight of this despicably innuendo-laden advertisement and its furry little star, youngsters everywhere will drop their Legos and head straight for the nearest farm.

“The Geico marketing team may have thought this would be humorous, but it is disgusting to see how the company takes lightly the act of bestiality,” One Million Moms said in a statement.

Tell me this: does anyone – other than the OMM – not take lightly the act of bestiality? Does any normal person not react with mirth, and maybe a little chuckle, in addition to any fleeting sickness felt, at the suggestion that a person has been engaging in sexual acts with an animal? You laugh at how crazy they must be, right? Like, “Ha, that guy’s f-ed up!” Wouldn’t that be the usual reaction?

I tell you what, though – the OMM shouldn’t exactly be throwing stones around about taking things lightly, or in one way or another. In this situation, there is only one party who has reacted unreasonably to something, and I’ll give you a hint: it ain’t Geico.

On the other hand, those commercials with the pig are my girlfriend’s favorite…so I guess I should be worried…
